Group 2: Rhine River Cruise

with Oberammergau Passion Play Munich to Amsterdam 16 day cruise/tour - May 24 --- June 8, 2020

We are extremely excited about this special tour and cruise we have created. The second most popular cruise itinerary in Europe is the Romantic Rhine. You will also enjoy the windmills and Ann Frank’s House in Amsterdam, the Cathedral in Cologne (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and sail through possibly the most beautiful area offered on any river cruise. The 40-mile section of the Middle Rhine Valley – its castles, historic towns and vineyards are so beautiful that it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are many highlights on this tour, but three more need to be mentioned: The wonderful old section of Strasbourg, the cobblestone streets of Basel and our visit to the tiny country of Lichtenstein!

We have Fun For Less staff and educators that will be taking care of you throughout this special tour and cruise. In Munich, you will be met by two of our tour managers that will stay with you from Munich until you get on the cruise in Basel. The Oberammergau Passion Play is a MAJOR part of this package. Dr. S. Michael Wilcox will join you in Munich and help prepare you for your Passion Play experience. After the Passion Play, your tour managers will accompany you to the wonderful quaint village Grindelwald for two nights. We will also spend one night in Zermatt before boarding our cruise ship in Basel. Diane and Rob Prince will meet you in Basel. Diane will be your guest educator throughout your Rhine River Cruise from Basel to Amsterdam.

River Cruise Information

Huge Savings Combined with Luxury Cruising and a Great Itinerary

We had several goals when we started negotiating with river cruise lines in Europe to take our groups:

Lower the pricing: By doing partial or full charters, we are able to save our passengers up to $1,000 PER PERSON! On some sailings, the cruise company offers $250 per person early bird discounts, but NO ONE EVER offers a $600 to $1,000 per person discount! We not only save you money, we have improved the shore excursions and added an educator. YES, the cruise line made us an unbelievable deal AND we are passing the savings on to you!

  • Look at OUR special savings over the cruise lines prices for 2020 Cabins.
    • Cat D- Two Large Port Hole Windows – 160 square feet:

The itinerary below is subject to change as needed at any time to accomplish everything we can in each area we visit. We will have local guides who will make sure we see the very best in the time we have.

Day 1: May 24: Fly to Munich
We depart our home and travel to Munich.

Day 2 & 3: May 25 & 26: Munich
Today and tomorrow we will tour Munich and will also have lectures from Dr. S. Michael Wilcox on the Life of Christ and the Passion Play.

Day 4: May 27: Munich – Oberammergau
This morning we will travel into the German Alps and enjoy the beautiful scenery and do some touring before checking into our 4-star deluxe Passion Play hotel.

Day 5: May 28: Oberammergau
This morning we will tour the Oberammergau area. This afternoon will be the first half of the Passion Play. Then there will be a break for dinner, which is included. After, we will return to the second half of the Passion Play. Late this evening you will return back to your hotel.

Day 6: May 29: Oberammergau – Grindelwald
This morning we will depart Oberammergau and drive to Grindelwald. Along the way, we will visit the tiny country of Liechtenstein. We will spend two nights in the quaint village of Grindelwald.

Day 7: May 30: Grindelwald
Our first stop is in Lauterbrunnen, where you will see rock formations and waterfalls. A little bit further, in this same valley, you visit the Trümmelbachfälle, a series of ten waterfalls “inside” the mountain.  It is one of the Wonders of the World and even after seeing them, you will still not believe it. Just after this comes the next highlight. We take the cogwheel train to Wengen and take a stroll in this charming mountain resort. In January the longest downhill race, the “Lauberhorn” takes place on these slopes. The views here are unforgettable!  You will enjoy the majestic wide-screen panoramic view of the Jungfrau Group during your train ride.  Overnight Grindelwald.

Day 8: May 31: Grindelwald – Zermatt
This morning we will drive to Zermatt, where we will spend the day visiting the large church and visit the separate mountain climbers cemetery.  Here you see the graves of those who perished while practicing their favorite sport. Stop at the memorial to those who climbed the Matterhorn for the first time and learn how they did it. Also, see the old village with its cozy wooden houses. Then we take the cogwheel mountain train which brings us high up to the Gornergrat at over 10,000 feet! Here you see the highest mountains of your trip, including the majestic Matterhorn. We will return by cog-wheel train. The rest of the day you can relax and shop the fantastic resort of Zermatt. Overnight Zermatt.

Day 9: June 1: Zermatt – Basel
Today we will travel from Zermatt to Basel.  We will explore Basel before we board our AmaWaterways ship. Tomorrow morning we will set sail on the Rhine for Amsterdam.

Important Note: The owners of Fun For Less Tours experienced an AmaWaterways sailing between Basel and Amsterdam in 2018. They were more than impressed. Having sailed with other river cruise companies they were worried they would have to arrange or change all of the shore excursions. Other companies, give few choices, have additional fees for some of their shore excursions and often include several wineries where they can get extra commissions from the sales. To their surprise, AmaWaterways far exceeded their expectations. In many of the ports of call they had several choices of tours, none of which cost extra. The owners were so pleased with AmaWaterways selection of shore excursions, they found there was very little they would change. They have, what you would call, tweaked or made slight improvements to a couple of shore excursions. AmaWaterways already included premium tours at no additional cost. There was very little we needed to change. At many of the ports of call, the ship may offer different shore excursions, including often a bicycle tour. We have listed the shore excursion we found to be the best choice. If after you arrive at the ship, any that would like to change to a different tour or the bicycle tour can make the change once on the ship.

Day 10: June 2: Breisach
Shore excursion to Riquewihr France: A beautiful preserved picturesque ancient walled village.  It has not changed for hundreds of years.

Day 11: June 3:  Strasbourg France – stunning beauty
Our special tweaked tour that includes the Mont Saint-Odile Abby (not included with AmaWaterways), combined with AmaWaterway’s Strasbourg City Tour with free time in Strasbourg.

Day 12: June 4: Speyer
During the day the Heidelberg Castle Tour with free time in Heidelberg.
In the evening we will visit Siegfried’s Mechanical music Cabinet – well worth the visit!

Day 13: June 5: Rüdesheim – Rhine Gorge sailing a World Heritage section of the Rhine.
There are approximately 40 castles and fortresses within 40kl of the Rhine Gorge. This part of the Rhine is a major highlight.  In Rudesheim, you will also enjoy a Gondola Ride with some free time in the Village.

Day 14: June 6: Cologne
Our special tour that includes the Schloss Berg Castle in Solingen (not normally included with AmaWaterways) combined with AmaWaterway’s Cologne Walking tour and the Cathedral Visit.

Day 15: June 7: Amsterdam
Amsterdam City Tour & Canal Cruise: A combination of bus, walking, canal cruise, plus a visit to see a windmill.

Day 16: June 8: Fly home
This morning we will disembark our AmaWaterways ship and head to the airport for your flight back to the US and home.  You will arrive home the same day.
