India - by Luxury Train

with Kathmandu, Nepal & Mt. Everest 18 day tour - December 27, 2024

Deccan Odyssey Luxury Train

Traveling by Luxurious Train is the Perfect way to see the very best that India has to offer. With our land tour of India, many of our days are spent traveling from one location to another with very little sightseeing on the travel days. Most travel days involve 5 to 6 hours of traveling by bus with additional time at restrooms and some sightseeing to break up the day. There are no simple short cuts, even when flying you have the drive to the airport, two hours at the airport before the flight, the flight time, the time gathering luggage and loading of the buses, along with the time to drive from the airport into the city. There is only one way to get more from India in the time you have there – travel on one of India’s luxurious overnight trains. After a day of touring in an area, you have a wonderful dinner on board your luxury train. Later in the evening, the train travels through the night to your next destination. After arriving refreshed, having a great breakfast, it is off to another full day of touring with the train there is no wasted travel days and no continually checking into and out of hotels. In comparison to the number of days it takes our November group to experience Agra, Jaipur and Jodhpur the train has taken you to Agra, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jaipur AND to Modhopur for a wildlife safari in a Tiger Reserve.

NEW Additions with our Train Group

Our November group is gone 18 days, our new luxury train tour is also gone 18 days – BUT with the ability to visit more when traveling through the night by luxury train – we have been able to add 5 additional cities, forts and palaces to visit.

Here is the list of new sites we will be visiting:

  • Mumbai (Bombay), India
  • Kolkata (Calcutta), India
  • Udaipur, India
  • Jaisalmer, India
  • Modhopur, India
    • It is here you will have a wildlife safari into Ranthambore National Park, home to tigers, leopards and marsh crocodiles.
Jodhpur Fort – the most beautiful ancient Palace Fort in India

Optional 4 Day Extension To The Ancient Country of Bhutan

Bhutan is a small picturesque country located high in the Himalayas with a border to Tibet. It was almost completely cut off for centuries with no roads in or out. It has tried to let in some aspects of the outside world while fiercely guarding its ancient traditions. They still wear clothing styles that are from the 16th century. Bhutan “Land of the Thunder Dragon”, only began to open up to outsiders in the 1970s.

Bhutan’s ancient Buddhist culture, friendly people and breathtaking scenery make it a natural tourist attraction. Tourism is very restricted. They limit the number of visas each year and all visitors must travel as part of a pre-arranged package or guided tour, it is not open to independent travelers. Fun For Less Tours’ owners have been to Bhutan and have worked hard to obtain a chance for our passengers to visit this wonderful country. We highly recommend you add this optional extension!!!!

The Positives and Negatives of our India Land Tour

The Land Tour Positives

  • Both include Kathmandu.
  • Both include the flight to see Mount Everest.
  • Both include the Bhutan Option.
  • Both include Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur and the Samode Palace.
  • Both include the Sacred Ganges River.
  • Both stay in 5 star-luxury hotels and Palaces.
  • Both include all tours, buses, guides and entrance fees.
  • The Land Tour Includes some Maharajas’ Palaces the train group will miss.
  • Includes Pushkar Festival – Only happens over a few days in November.
  • The Land Tour is less expensive.

The Land Tour Negatives

  • Many Travel Days. There are many travel days, often with 5 – 6 hour drives. There is usually some amount of touring to break up the drives, but most sites visited on travel days are not highlight sites.
  • Limited Number of sites we can visit while in India. The travel days by bus or by flying limit the number of sites we can visit during your time in India.
  • Living out of a suitcase. In order to see as much as we can in the time you are in India, we never stay more than two nights in any given city – you either pack and repack often or live out of your suite case during your India Tour.
  • Breakfast is included, but lunches and dinners are extra. Dinners are too expensive to arrange for a group in our 5 Star Luxury Hotels and Palaces. The restaurants in your Luxury Hotels and Palaces do offer ala carte menus that are still expensive but much less than what it costs to arrange a group meal. Important: we always recommend eating at your Luxury Hotels or Palaces in India as food in other area restaurants are often not up to the quality of what will sit well with your system.

After a leisurely breakfast on board, you will visit the Taj Mahal, which was Emperor Shah Jahan’s gift of love to his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, and is truly the world’s most wondrous monument. The making of the Taj Mahal is as much a fable as the edifice itself. It took 20,000 men 22 years to build this unrivaled mausoleum and its exquisite white marble was brought from 200 miles away by caravans of elephants and camels. Special Lunch at a City Hotel. After lunch, your tour of Agra continues as you visit Itmad-ud-Daulah, a marble mausoleum built by Nur Jahan, the wife of Emperor Jahangir, in memory of her father, Ghiyas Beg. Sometimes called the ‘Baby Taj’, it is beautifully conceived in white marble, mosaic and lattice. Thereafter proceed to Agra Fort, another outstanding example of Mughal architecture, and the seat of Mughal reign and administration for three generations. The present structure owes its origins to Emperor Akbar who had its first buildings of red sandstone erected on the eastern bank of the river Yamuna. His grandson Shah Jahan, the most artistic and prolific builder of the dynasty, later added the impressive marbled private quarters and the mosque while Aurangzeb added the outer ramparts. A visit to the Diwan-e-Am, ‘Hall of Public Audience’ and the Royal Pavilions is not to be missed. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before you set out for your village safari.  The people of Rajasthan’s villages are mostly tribal who subsist on farming and hunting. These friendly folk are warm and welcoming, happy to show guests around their villages, giving deep insights into their daily lives. The women here wear bright colors to offset the drab desert, and most people live in mud huts. Visit a local home and interact with the family. When you’re done with the village safari, return to the comfort of the Deccan Odyssey. Enjoy a leisurely lunch before you set out for a tiger game drive. Day 15: January 10: Deccan Odyssey Luxury Train — Jaipur
Legendary for the triumphs of its proud Rajputs, Jaipur, the City of Victory, is surrounded by the rugged Aravali hills – crowned by formidable forts – and beautiful palaces, mansions and gardens. The city is a colorful oasis in the desert and you will notice a timeless quality to Jaipur’s bazaars and its people.
