Iceland, Norway & The Arctic Circle

Iceland, Norway & Denmark 17 day cruise/tour - June 2, 2020

We wanted to put a tour and cruise that would combine the spectacular countries of Iceland and Norway with a fantastic cruise through Norway’s majestic fjords all the way into the Arctic Circle. We found just the right combination!!! This is one of the most staggeringly beautiful trips you can take anywhere on this earth. Cruising through the Fjords of Norway all the way into the Arctic Circle is an experience rarely matched by any other tour. We have combined this special Fjords of Norway & Arctic Circle Cruise with a land tour that includes Iceland and Denmark.

The terrain of Iceland is unlike any other. It is the land of extremes, from volcanic landscapes to glacial ice caps. We will spend a few days in Iceland doing a fire and ice tour in order to see the very unique and vibrant landscape before flying to Copenhagen. You will then cruise through stunning fjords and explore beautiful ports of call! You will pass and stop at many of the quaint villages located throughout Norway’s Fjords. Your ports of call include Alesund Norway, Tromso Norway, Honningsvag Norway, Geiranger Norway, Olden Norway, Stavanger Norway and Copenhagen Denmark. Two of your ports of call (Tromso & Honningsvag) are located deep inside the Arctic Circle. You will spend 4 days cruising inside the Arctic Circle during the longest days of the year when the sun never sets.

To this special cruise we have added a land tour that will include Iceland and Copenhagen, Denmark. This really is the best way to see and experience the BEST of Scandinavia!!! Life just doesn’t get any better than this. We recommend this cruise/tour be put at the top of your bucket list of places to visit in the world!

Day 1: June 2: Fly from the U.S. to Iceland

Day 2: June 3: Reykjavik, Iceland
We arrive into Reykjavik early this morning.  After our arrival we have an adventures day to Iceland´s second largest glacier and the world´s largest man-made ice tunnel. This adventure day starts as we travel towards Langjökull,      Iceland´s second largest glacier. On the way we visit the beautiful Hraunfossar Waterfalls and Deildartunguhver geothermal hot spring. The journey begins to elevate to the Icelandic Highlands and drive through arctic desert in footsteps of the glacier. We will climb up to 1250m above sea level where we will go inside Langjökull glacier. After we have been 200m inside and 40m under the glacier, we head back to Reykjavik where we overnight.
Day 3: June 4: Reykjavik, Iceland
We will have the opportunity to see the divine beauty of Iceland’s Golden Circle, which encompasses many of Iceland’s most famous landmarks. First we visit Thingvellir National Park, a historical, cultural and geological wonder. The valley of Thingvellir is one of the only valleys in the world not created by a glacier or river.  It straddles the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and is literally being pulled apart a few millimeters every year! Afterward we stop at Gulfoss Waterfall, meaning “Golden Falls”.   Here we watch the 105-foot double-cascade waterfall as it plunges into the gorge below. This is Europe’s largest waterfall and on a sunlit day, the mist clouds surrounding the hammering falls are filled with dozens of rainbows, providing an unparalleled spectacle of color and motion. Last, we will visit Strokkur geyser, which spouts a 60-100 foot jet about once every five minutes.
Day 4: June 5: Reykjavik – Copenhagen
Day 5: June 6: Copenhagen
We will do a city tour of Copenhagen which will include the Little Mermaid and the church that has the Christus that the LDS church replicated for Temple Square.  The tour is included in the land portion of your Arctic Circle Package.  We overnight a second night in Copenhagen.
Day 6: June 7: Copenhagen Denmark
For those who purchased our shore excursion package will enjoy a tour to Frederiksborg Castle.  This beautiful palace was built early in the 17th century by King Christian IV and is said to be one of the finest Renaissance palaces in Northern Europe. Later we drive through the Danish countryside to visit Kronborg Castle.  This castle was immortalized in Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet”.  This afternoon we return to Copenhagen and board our beautiful cruise ship.  Anyone who chooses not to do the shore excursion package will have to get a taxi from the hotel to the cruise ship at there own convenience at there own expense.
Day 7: June 8: Fun Day at Sea
Today will be a fun day at sea with time to explore your beautiful ship and hear from our special guest educator:  Dr. Bernell Christensen.
Day 8: June 9: Stavanger, Norway
Today’s port of call is Stavanger Norway.  For those that are doing our optional shore excursion package, we will be doing a tour of Stavanger and surrounding area.
Day 9: June 10: Arctic Circle Crossing
Today we cross into the Arctic Circle.  It is another fun day at sea to enjoy your ship and hear from our educator Dr Bernell Christensen.
Day 10: June 11: Tromso, Norway
Today’s port of call is Tromso Norway.  For those that have signed up for our optional shore excursion package our tour begins with a drive through the center of town crossing the bridge from the island of Tromso and over to the mainland to have a short photo stop in front of the famous Arctic Cathedral. We then drive back over the bridge to the island of Kvaløya Norway’s 5th largest island. The bus takes us through dramatic landscapes along the coast, just feet from the mountains. After an hour and a half (including photo stops) we arrive into Sommarøy, a small island and fishing village facing the Nordic Sea. In Sommarøy we’ll walk through the charming village with its two churches, harbor and white sandy beach.  You will have some free time to enjoy a local treat, the scenery or go shopping for local handicrafts. Leaving Sommarøy we’ll take the northbound road along the sea and the fjords, heading for Ringvassøya.  At Ringvassøya we enjoy a stop at Lake Skogsfjordvannet before we head back to Tromso.
Day 11: June 12: Honningsvag, Norway
Today’s port of call is Honningsvag Norway the furthest north city in Europe.  The longest day of the year is only a few days away from now.  We are so far north, the sun may never set, it will be light the whole night.  Honningsvag has a population of less than 2,500.  In 1997 Norwegian legislation determined that in order to be considered a city, there must be a population of at least 5,000.  When the Honningsvagians learned of the impeding legislation they rushed to have their status as a city declared, thus preserving its status as the norther most city in Europe!  For those that have signed up for our optional shore excursion package we will start by driving across the barren landscape of the Arctic tundra of Mageroya to the North Cape cliff.  From here  the only thing between you and the North Pole is the islands of Svalbard.  While here at the “end of the world” we visit two small settlements which are distinct in their inhabitants, their stories and their scenery.  We then return to Honningsvag and our ship.
Day 12: June 13: Fun Day at Sea
Today will be a fun day at sea with time to explore your beautiful ship and hear from our special guest educator:  Dr. Bernell Christensen.
Day 13: June 14: Alesund, Norway
Today’s port of call is Alesund Norway.  For those that have signed up for our optional shore excursion package, we will spend the day touring Alesund and the surrounding area.  Today we will begin with a highlight tour of Alesund.  Alesund is a charming town with German-style architecture.  This is due to a catastrophic fire in 1904 which left more than 10,000 people homeless.  Keiser Wilhelm of Germany often vacationed in the area and when he heard of the fire he sent four warships loaded with construction supplies and assisted the reconstruction.  Later we continue to the Troll Road, Trollstigen.  This impressive stretch of road climbs along the steep mountainside with 11 hairpin turns.  This is one of Norway’s top tourist destinations.  Once we reach the top you will have free time to stroll around and take pictures.  The day will conclude back at the cruise ship.
Day 14: June 15: Flam, Norway
Today’s port of call is Flam Norway.  For those that have signed up for our optional shore excursion package we will be doing a tour of Flam and the surrounding area.
Day 15: June 16: Geiranger, Norway
Today’s port of call is Geiranger Norway.  We dock later in the morning, so this morning we will have time to hear from our guest educator.  This is a very small port and the cruise line controls all of the buses in the area.  We are not able to offer an excursion in this port.   You have several options for your day.  You may enjoy strolling through this small village and visit the Norwegian Fjord Center which is described as“authentic old farm buildings, dramatic tableaux and a captivating picture show – it is so realistic that it is like traveling back hundreds of years in time. The visit takes about an hour, but the memories last a lifetime!”  The center is about a mile walk from the pier.  The cruise line also offers excursions in this port.  You can book them online or onboard the ship.
Day 16: June 17: Fun Day at Sea
Today is a fun day at sea.  We will and have our disembarkation meeting today.
Day 17: June 18: Copenhagen – fly home
This morning we will transfer to the airport for our flight back to the US and home.
