Later we explore the verdant countryside on our way to visit three villages Dalcahue, San Juan and Tenaun. Each of these rural villages boast a unique heritage from beautiful churches, local handicraft markets and rich fishing heritage. The Chilean Fjords are more spectacular than Norway’s or Alaska’s. They stretch for over 1,000 miles of virgin-forested islands, glistening glaciers and more fjords than in all of Scandinavia!
Day 9: February 6: Canal Sarmiento – Amalia Glacier
You will be among the very few that have ever sailed through the Terra del Fuego, with its snow-capped peaks and beautiful blue glaciers of Canal Sarmiento. Cutting through Chile’s Torres Del Paine National Park, this Majestic waterway is surrounded by beauty beyond description, including the Amalia Glacier.
Day 10: February 7: Strait of Magellan, Punta Arenas, Cockburn & Beagle Channels
Punta Arenas is a remote town, pioneered by Yugoslav settlers and sheep ranchers. It sits on rolling hills overlooking the strait of Magellan. The strait of Magellan is where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans converge. The strait, protected by both the mainland and islands of the Tierra Del Fuego archipelago, was considered safer than Cape Horn or Drake Passage. For those doing our optional tour package: Today’s tour will bring you up close and personal to Magellan Penguins. You cannot touch them but they can touch you. Many of our passengers had the wonderful experience of having a penguin grab their shoe or pant leg as they walked by – you really will be able to get up close to the penguins. We will tour Punta Arenas and spend some time shopping before returning to the ship.
Day 11: February 8: Glacier Alley – Ushuaia
This morning we will pass through Glacier Alley, it is more impressive than anything you have seen in Alaska. We will then dock at Ushuaia, the most southern city in the world. For those doing our optional tour: Our tour today will include a tour of Tierra Del Fuego National Park. You will visit the end of the world’s longest stretch of road. The Pan American Highway stretches 11,987 miles from Alaska to Tierra Del Fuego. We will also have time to tour Ushuaia and give you time to shop before returning to the ship.
Day 12: February 9: Cape Horn – Drake Passage
The Cape Horn marks the southernmost point of South America. The cape’s steep and rocky cliffs rise up and extend into the Drake Passage, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet. Ancient Mariners dreaded rounding the Cape because of its reputation for bad weather. We will only spend one hour cruising around the cape before heading out to sea toward the Antarctic.
Day 13: February 10: Fun Day at Sea
We will again meet for our own social and take time to hear from Michael.
Day 14: February 11: Antarctic sailing - Wilhelm Archipelago
Today we will sail by Anvers Island (Palmer Station) Cuverville Island and Peterman Island. We will skirt jagged cliffs to Anvers Island, home of the U.S Antarctic Biological Research Center – Palmer Station. In the past they were able to have some of the scientists to come aboard and talk to everyone. We will also see the wide cobbled beaches of Cuverville Island, home to Antarctica’s extensive colony of Gentoo Penguins. The Petermann Island is where French explorer/ scientist Dr. Jean Baptiste Charcot studied the Adelie Penguins during the winter of 1909.
Day 15: February 12: Antarctic Sailing – The Danco Coast
We continue to sail through the Antarctic area and to some of the most beautiful places in the world.
Day 16: February 13: Antarctic Sailing – The Antarctic Sound:
Today we sail to Hope Bay (Esperanza Station), Paulet & Elephant Islands. At Hope Bay the scarlet chalets of Esperanza, an Antarctic Argentine military and scientific station, stand in stark contrast to the white Ice. Paulet Island has several million Adelie Penguins nesting on ever available beach – and at Elphant Island, you can hear the riveting account of Shacketon’s ill-fated expedition and the crew’s heroic daily struggle to survive.
Day 17: February 14: Fun Day at Sea
We again will have time to spend with each other and Michael.
Day 18: February 15: Pt. Stanley Falkland Islands
Once you get past the end of town, it is the end of the road, from here you can only travel by 4 wheel drive. Stanley is filled with moorland, pubs, red phone booths, sheep ranchers and “cuppa tea”.

We again will have time to spend with each other and Michael.

Our complete optional package #2 is only: $995
On most cruises when a person cancels more than 120 days before the cruise, the cruise line allows us to resell the cabin with only a name change fee. Starting sometime in January 2011 Holland America chose to keep every cabin cancelled, and would not allow any company to resell them. The Antarctic was so popular we had over 100 passengers on a wait list wanting any available cabin. We couldn’t accommodate any of them. Holland took back all cabins from our customers who had problems without allowing us to offer them to our wait list.
This creates a problem. Let’s say over the year we were to lose 10 cabins that had to be turned back in. That would mean we would lose 20 passengers that were helping to pay for buses, guides, educators, escorts, etc. We have based all of our costs on the total number of customers! When you lose passengers, even for a good reason, you have less to share the fixed costs. You can’t go back to the other passengers and say, “I am sorry, but we need to raise your cost because we had passengers cancel and the cruise line would not let us replace them.” We also do not want to raise the prices so that everyone pays extra in case there are cancellations. Many of the cabins that were turned back were resold by Holland America for $800 or more than our passengers paid for them. They can make more money keeping the cabin than letting us resell it.
The Antarctic cancellation policy will be a little different than our other tours or cruises. Our policy for 2016 is as follows:
